Every year, the SIS Swiss International School Group honors the three best extended essays of graduating students from SIS schools worldwide. The first-prize winner gets a trip to Brazil to stay in Rio de Janeiro with a host family from our Brazilian school, Escola Suíço-Brasileira, and Brazilian winners get a trip to a school in Europe. Second and third prize winners receive gift certificates of monetary value.
The written assignments originate in the context of the final examination corresponding to the Matura, Abitur or International Baccalaureate (IB) exam. The topics of the extended essays differ greatly. However, their common denominator is the presentation of an independent, autonomous piece of reflection and research, captured in a 4.000 word paper.
To date, two SIS Basel students have won the competition and received the award of a trip to Brazil.
The first SIS Basel Best Essay winner, in 2017, was Dietrich Varaklis for his examination of the development of the Erlenmattpark next to the SIS Basel and its impact on the surrounding residents and nature.
The winner of the SIS Best Essay Award 2018 is Vivianne Götz, whose paper investigated the leading causes of the population loss of honey bees in Switzerland by collecting data from local beekeepers.
The winner of 2019 will be announced this month.
