Creative Arts Education in Grade 6

Design & Technology

Within Design and Technology Grade 6 have been sewing. Throughout several projects, students learnt to work to a design brief, create and follow a design or pattern and how to do several types of stitches. Throughout this unit, we avoided using sewing machines and focused primarily on hand sewing techniques.

Their first project was to design and create a stuffed toy. For this task, students looked at the design choices of deciding on different types of fabric and colour combinations. They then modified a pre-existing pattern of a teddy bear to design a toy that would appeal to them. This project enabled the children to learn and practice back stitch, running stitch and blanket stitch. We are sure you will agree that they turned out great!

For their assessment project, grade 6 students were able to put into practice all of the skills learnt while making their teddy, to create a patchwork cushion. This involved quite a lot of maths, as children needed to calculate sizes of their fabric squares (allowing enough overlap for seams) and the most challenging part, creating a border to match the size of their backing material.

We have been really impressed at the skill and enthusiasm that all grade 6 students showed throughout this unit of work. Some children have already begun creating their own projects at home with their new found interest in sewing.
