Bike to Work Challenge: Our Teachers Get Moving

Nachhaltigkeit SIS Zürich-Wollishofen

This June, teachers from SIS Zürich-Wollishofen are participating in the Bike to Work Challenge, a nationwide initiative that encourages people to choose active and sustainable ways to commute to work. This year, we have four school teams made up of four participants. While most of the members are biking, each team includes one walker.

Many teachers commute from the Zürich region, while others bike in from Horgen, Uster, and Küsnacht. Everyone is trying to start the day in a healthy and environmentally friendly way. This challenge is more than simply biking to and from work; it allows participants to improve their fitness, boost energy levels, reduce stress, and lower their carbon footprint. Martin Siegrist, who teaches German in Primary 5, shared why he enjoys biking to school: “I love biking to school in the morning, especially in spring and summer, as it allows me to experience the changing seasons first-hand. On the journey home, I have time to reflect on the day and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of Zürich.”

Teachers Embrace the Challenge
It has been inspiring to see so many teachers getting involved. Francesca Sganzerla, who teaches sport and art, said: “I enjoy the beautiful scenery, fresh air, and sharing a common goal with the team”. Some have more experience biking, while others are taking the opportunity to try a new routine and spend more time outdoors. School principal Ryan Howard said: “The Bike to Work Challenge has provided me with the extra motivation I needed to exercise more, while also encouraging team spirit and helping the environment.” No matter their reason for participating, everyone contributed to making the challenge a rewarding experience.

By taking part in the Bike to Work Challenge, our teachers are showing that small everyday choices can make a positive difference. We wish all teams good luck for the remainder of the challenge and look forward to seeing how many kilometres they achieve by the end of June.
