The Making of a Champion: Kristina Kontny’s Story

Lebendige Schulgemeinschaft Lokale Verbundenheit SIS Zürich-Wollishofen

After 11 years of professional hockey, our Grade 6 teacher Kristina Kontny at SIS Zürich-Wollishofen is stepping away from the game and reflecting on the journey that brought her to this point.

Our Grade 6 English teacher, Kristina Kontny, has ended her professional hockey career after 11 dedicated years. Kristina and her EVZ teammates marked the end of this inspiring chapter filled with passion, teamwork, and perseverance by becoming the champions of the PostFinance Women's League.

From Ice to the Classroom
Kristina took the time to share how her journey began. At seven years old, she attended her first professional men’s hockey game with her father. It was after this game that her passion for hockey was ignited, but her first challenge was learning how to skate. From 5th to 9th grade, she played on an all-boys team, as a girls’ team did not yet exist.

After 9th grade, she joined a U19 league and practiced every evening. When her parents saw her talent and dedication, they fully supported her dream. She was eventually scouted and went on to study at St. Olaf College in Minnesota to continue pursuing hockey. When she was offered the opportunity to play professionally overseas, she eagerly accepted.

Kristina carried the values she learned on the ice into the classroom. As a former team captain, she developed strong communication skills and understands the importance of teamwork. She is someone who never gives up and lives by the belief: “Don’t tell me I can’t do something – I’ll make it happen.”

She credits her family with helping her achieve her dreams. The countless hours her parents spent driving her to and from practice are something she will always be grateful for. Her father surprised her by coming to watch her play one last time, creating a memory she will never forget.

Kristina is also incredibly thankful for the support she has received from her SIS family. “Seeing the kids and the school so excited and interested in our games makes me want to perform better – it’s my way of saying thank you,” she shared.

After retirement, Kristina plans to return to teaching full-time, with the goal of eventually moving into coaching. Wherever life takes her, Kristina is sure to continue making a difference.
