Mrs Campbell begins by taking the class to the nearby forest. She discusses how to stay safe and how to keep the environment safe when outdoors. For example, we should ask permission before petting a dog, and we should not pick flowers in case they are poisonous and so that they are free to grow. It is impressive how well the intro students know these rules and the reasons for them. They are definitely ready to explore!
Curious Minds at the Forest Edge
The class then walks happily to the forest holding onto their partner’s hands. When they arrive at the edge of the forest, the students sit down for a discussion about the weather. Questions are asked such as: Where does the rain come from? Why are the clouds black? How does the water cycle work? The children all share their ideas, and the teacher explains that the clouds are so full of water that the sun cannot shine through, making them dark. The students also know all about the water cycle.
Learning Through Play and Exploration
The class then walks further into the forest using the path provided, singing songs and then stopping to play. They write their names and dig in the soil, find treasured leaves and stones and big branches to build with, and they talk and play with their friends. There are also some balance beams to walk on for those brave enough (a little help is always offered).
A Day to Remember
Too soon, it is time to return to school as it is almost home time. Surely these students are going to have a lot to talk about and share with their families in the evening. What a lot of fun they had exploring the environment around them and experiencing the weather in a hands-on way.
