At our primary school, students aged six and above acquire high-level language skills in both English and German. We promote awareness and respect for other cultures as the basis for an international education. We aim to empower students and give them a voice in their learning process.
At our bilingual primary school, teaching is based on the Swiss curriculum (Lehrplan 21). This is gradually supplemented with elements of the British curriculum as well as with curricula developed by SIS. The development of language skills in German and English is of paramount importance at this level, which is why we have developed our own bilingual reading and writing curricula. By attending our primary school, children are ideally prepared for the transition into the SIS bilingual college.
Each of our primary school classes has two teachers: one German-speaking and one English-speaking teacher. In this way, primary school students are completely immersed in a bilingual environment during the week. As such, German and English are heard and spoken in almost equal measure throughout the day. Furthermore, students learn French as a foreign language as of Year 5.
Will my child's learning progress be hindered by bilingual teaching?
No. Scientific studies and the experiences at our schools have shown that learning in two languages promotes cognitive flexibility and also development. The best results are achieved through extensive early immersion prior to the start of formal…More questions?
We encourage our students to take an active role in their learning by using different teaching strategies to promote student engagement and critical thinking skills to enhance each student’s learning potential. Our schools create an engaging learning space in which students are guided towards being curious, motivated learners. Working with tablets and notebooks, for example, enables students to acquire new knowledge in a playful manner and helps them deepen their understanding of what they have already learned.
We want to actively support families by offering useful and flexible services and trying to adapt to their busy schedules. Your child can be at school daily from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Lessons take place Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., and on Wednesdays from 8:30 a.m. to 12 noon. Daily from 3. p.m. to 4 p.m. (except Wednesday), we also offer homework supervision included in the school fees. On Wednesday afternoons, children are supervised free of charge until 4 p.m.
From 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., students can choose from a range of leisure activities or clubs, or they can go outside for some fresh air and enjoy themselves.
Other activities outside the classroom enrich our school life and strengthen our school community. Read more about our vivid everyday life.
From Year 3 of primary school, our students sit national and international benchmarking tests and achieve good results on a regular basis. We use the results to analyse the effectiveness of teaching and plan next steps in learning. Results are communicated transparently to parents and provide a basis for individual objectives, which are discussed in parent consultations with the teachers twice a year.
SIS primary school students who achieve the necessary grade average can transfer to the SIS bilingual college without needing to sit admission examinations.
