Get off to a Flying Start with the Bilingual Matura

The SIS bilingual college leads to the nationally recognised bilingual Matura (Hausmaturität) either in six years directly after primary school or in four years after secondary school. English and German are equally important, both as languages of instruction and in day-to-day school life. Our college students also have the opportunity to participate in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP), where they can obtain the globally recognised IB Diploma in addition to the Matura in their final two years.

A Broad General Education

At college level, students enjoy a general education that is both broad and deep. The following fundamental subjects are covered: German, English, French, Latin (only in the first two years of the long-term college), mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, geography, history, introduction to economy and law, music, creative arts and sports. Our students also learn important social, emotional and procedural skills and attitudes. With this set of skills, our students are fully prepared to face the academic, professional and interpersonal challenges ahead. However, unlike in primary school, each subject is taught exclusively in one language. Great care is taken that students use both languages in as equal proportion as possible.

Specialised Subjects

Students can choose one of three specialised subjects: “economics and law” (in German), “biology and chemistry” (in English) or “physics and applications of mathematics” (in German).

Extracurricular Activities

In addition, we offer extracurricular activities such as educational excursions, summer and winter sports camps, day trips to cultural and scientific institutions, visits to the theatre, athletic and academic competitions, author readings, and musical performances from the German-, English- and French-speaking cultural spheres, as well as a one-week industry placement in a local company.

Digital Skills and Language Certificates

In addition to gaining the ability to participate in bilingual classes in a natural way, our students also acquire solid and hands-on IT skills. In Year 9, they each receive their own laptop or bring their own device to school. Furthermore, students have the opportunity to obtain language certificates in French.

Double diploma: Matura and International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma

Our college students graduate from the SIS bilingual college with the nationally recognised bilingual Matura (Hausmaturität). As a recognised IB World School, we also provide the option of simultaneously attending the two-year International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP). When opting for this opportunity, high-performing students follow an integrated programme that prepares them for both sets of exams during their final two years of college. With this dual qualification, they are ideally prepared for taking up their studies at Swiss or international universities.

The academically challenging combination of Matura and IBDP is only offered at a handful of Swiss schools, making it one of the distinct benefits of studying at SIS.

Spaces that Invite Learning and Activities that Endorse Our Culture of Learning

We are convinced that the place where students learn has a decisive influence on how they learn. We therefore place great importance on an open school space that provides a welcoming atmosphere to students, staff, parents and guests alike, thus creating a pleasant overall environment. We cultivate multiple signature school events and regularly participate in activities that involve all SIS schools around the globe.
