In February, students from our school participated in an international school chess tournament in Zurich, demonstrating great concentration, strategic thinking, and sportsmanship. In thrilling matches, they showcased their skills and gained valuable experience competing against other young chess talents. Since chess courses are offered at our school as part of our extra-curricular activities (ECA) we are particularly proud of the results achieved in this context. They demonstrate that our students’ dedication and the targeted support provided in chess classes are paying off. We warmly congratulate all participants and thank them for representing our school so well.

As in previous years, Mr. Kilbey from New Books 2 Go will again hold a book fair in the centre foyer of the school giving students and parents the chance to browse through his book selection. A wide range of English books for all ages and interests will be on offer.
Mr. Kilbey has visited our school community for a number of years now and we’re very happy that we will again get 10% of the proceeds in the form of new books for our libraries.
Should you wish your children to purchase a book under the class teacher’s guidance and supervision (Kindergarten – Primary 6 classes), then please provide them with some money. Please put the money in a sealed envelope with your child’s name on it.

Die Klassen vom Kindergarten 1 bis zur Primarstufe 2 nahmen in diesem Jahr mit grosser Freude am Fasnachtsumzug der Bläsischule teil. In den Wochen zuvor hatten die Kinder gemeinsam mit ihren Lehrpersonen mit viel Engagement ihre Kostüme, Larven und Masken selbst gestaltet und hergestellt. Die kreativen Ideen und die grosse Mühe, die sich alle gegeben haben, waren am Umzug deutlich zu sehen.
Am Tag des Umzugs spielte auch das Wetter wunderbar mit. Bei guter Stimmung zogen die Klassen durch die Strassen und genossen die besondere Fasnachtsatmosphäre. Besonders viel Spass machte es den Kindern, die Zuschauerinnen und Zuschauer am Strassenrand mit Räppli einzuseifen und Süssigkeiten zu verteilen.
Der Fasnachtsumzug war für alle Beteiligten ein fröhliches und gelungenes Erlebnis. Die Kinder, Lehrpersonen und Zuschauer hatten grosse Freude an diesem bunten Anlass. Schon jetzt freuen wir uns auf den Fasnachtsumzug im nächsten Jahr.

The Primary 3 students were able to dive into the world of science and laboratory work on a recent visit to the learning center of Hoffman La Roche in Kaiseraugst. In the Experio Roche School Laboratory, the children were introduced to the concept of MINT - Mathematics, Information Science, Science (Naturwissenschaft) and Technology - by Regina Kreyenbühl and her team. Wearing white lab coats and their protective eye-wear, the children learned about the process of carefully working with materials in a lab, dealing with acids and bases and the importance of safety regulations while creating unique artwork out of red cabbage juice, vinegar and lemon juice. Also, the children were given the opportunity to conduct experiments about air pressure, magnetism, mass and force. It was challenging to pull the children away from the experiments to return back to school. They truly enjoyed the Experio Roche experience.

Zum ersten Mal reisten die Klassen Primar 4 bis 6 gemeinsam ins Skilager – und schon die Busfahrt liess erahnen: Das wird eine besondere Woche! Gute Stimmung, viel Vorfreude und Sonnenschein begleiteten die Klassen in die Bergwelt von Hasliberg.
Kaum angekommen, ging es direkt los: Zimmer beziehen, Koffer auspacken – und dann hinaus in die Natur. Jede Stufe machte sich bereit für eine Wanderung.
Vor allem die Klasse P6 erlebte dabei ein echtes Abenteuer. Ihre Wanderung führte sie über diverse Wege, durch Wälder und über unebenes Gelände. Schritt für Schritt erklommen sie hohe Berge und kehrten nach mehreren Stunden müde, aber mit unvergesslichen Geschichten zurück.
Am ersten Tag konnte wegen einer Windwarnung leider nicht Ski gefahren werden (ausser die AnfängerInnen). Doch statt Trübsal zu blasen, machten alle das Beste daraus: Die Piste wurde zu Fuß erklommen und anschließend ging es mit Tellerschitten rasant wieder hinunter. Ebenso gab es einen Schneeskulpturen-Wettbewerb.
Die nächsten Tage standen dann jedoch ganz im Zeichen des Skifahrens. Ob Anfänger oder Profi – alle fanden die passende Gruppe und konnten ihre Fähigkeiten verbessern. Auf den Pisten wurde gelacht und geübt. Vor allem bei den Anfängern wurden Fortschritte schnell sichtbar. Der Spass stand immer im Mittelpunkt.
Doch nicht nur tagsüber war einiges geboten. Auch am Abend wurde es nie langweilig: Jede Klasse gestaltete ihr eigenes Programm. Von gemütlichen Filmabenden über lustige Spielrunden bis hin zu einer kreativen Talentshow oder einem Lagerfeuer war alles dabei. Die Abende stärkten den Zusammenhalt und sorgten für viele tolle Momente.
Am Ende der Woche war klar: Dieses Skilager war ein voller Erfolg.

SIS Cup 2026 - 20. - 21. Mai
Wir freuen uns sehr, in diesem Jahr Gastgeber des diesjährigen SIS Cups zu sein. Es ist ein jährliches Sportturnier, an dem über 100 ausgewählte Schülerinnen und Schüler der 5. und 6. Klassen von diversen SIS-Standorten weltweit teilnehmen.
Die Schülerinnen und Schüler messen ihre Kräfte in Einzeldisziplinen (z.B. Medizinballwurf, Weitsprung, etc.) und stellen ihre Teamfähigkeit beim Unihockey, Basketball, Parcours und Tischtennis unter Beweis.
Wir sind stolz auf unser Team, welches die SIS Basel beim Turnier vertreten wird. Ellie, Sofia, Ruben, Leo, Julia und Marc (alle Primar 6) bereiten sich bereits seit Oktober mit grossem Engagement auf den Wettbewerb vor und sind mehr als bereit :-)

Die P6 begab sich auf eine besondere Entdeckungstour: unter die Stadt Basel. Bei der Birsig-Tour tauchten wir in ein spannendes Stück Stadtgeschichte ein. Der Birsig – früher Energielieferant und Teil der Kanalisation – wurde über die Jahrhunderte hinweg immer mehr überdeckt und ist heute im Stadtbild kaum noch sichtbar.
Unterirdisch konnten die Schülerinnen und Schüler entdecken, wie stark dieser Stadtbach die Entwicklung Basels geprägt hat. Dabei wurde die Verbindung zwischen der Ober- und Unterwelt der Stadt plötzlich ganz greifbar.
Ein besonderes Erlebnis – und eine spannende Gelegenheit, Basel einmal aus einer ganz anderen Perspektive zu sehen.

On the last weekend of February, six SIS Basel students participated in the ISMTF Middle School Math Competition in Vienna. On the first day of the competition, around 150 students from international schools across Europe competed in teams of three, solving challenging math questions within a limited amount of time.
The following day, the students took part in a mathematical quest through the beautiful city center of Vienna, combining problem-solving with sightseeing the historical buildings and places. In the evenings, the students enjoyed playing chess and making friends with their peers from all across Europe during the social activities in the hostel.
We are very proud of the SIS Basel Team consisting of Shihan (Gym 2a), Francesco (Gym 1) and Richard (Gym 1), who achieved eighth place in this year's ISMTF math competition in Vienna! The second SIS Basel team of Sergei, Arshit and Reuben (all Int 2) also performed strongly and almost made it into the top ten. We congratulate all our students on a successful and rewarding competition experience!

Paul Cézanne in town!
In March 2026 many secondary classes attended a French guided tour in the Fondation Beyeler. It was a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the life and remarkable works of the famous French painter Paul Cézanne.
Some students from Gym 5 also had the chance to paint à la façon de Cézanne inside the Museum, applying their inspiration directly to practice.

A lot of people view ski camp as free time off school. No homework or studying for exams. But for a lot of us, it was a week to form new friendships and overcome challenges alongside friends. Whether that challenge was trying to learn a new turn on the snowboard or carving on skis. For a lot of us, ski camp isn’t about what we do or where we do it. Truly, it's all about who we do it with.
We started off isolated from each other, 7th grade sticking to their circles, while 8th grade kept to theirs, unsure of what the week would bring. However, spending days out on the slopes, skiing alongside people we didn’t even know the names of, only to end up forming concrete friendships, showed us that between 7th and 8th graders, the only difference visible was our ages. Spending long hours together showed us how we could all support each other, whether that was helping each other up after a fall or encouraging small victories.
By the end of the trip, the difference between Monday and Friday were noticeable. From sitting at different compartments on the train to jamming out to Justin Bieber on the bus ride back, the groups we arrived with didn’t matter as much as the friendships we made along the way.
And after a long week of shared laughter and countless falls, we all linked back to the real meaning of camps. Ski camp isn’t about what we do or where we do it. It will always be about who we do it with and the memories and friends you make on the way.

tiny room. hard beds. four people and way too much luggage and somehow it worked anyway. you stop noticing the space after the first night because you're too tired to care and too busy laughing at nothing.
instructors who didn't smile much but knew exactly what they were doing. they pushed you past the point where you wanted to stop and then pushed a little more. legs burning on the third run. going anyway. by the end of the week your body remembers things your brain hasn't caught up to yet. that's what good teaching feels like even if it doesn't feel good in the moment.
saas fee in the morning before the mountain fills up. glacier light hitting everything at that specific angle that doesn't exist anywhere else. cold that wakes you up faster than any coffee. standing at the top before the first run and just looking for a second because you have to.
a cowbell in the snow one evening. no explanation. no context. someone picked it up and we just kept walking. it came home with us. some things don't need a reason.
the evenings went too long every single night. conversations that started nowhere and ended nowhere and somehow mattered anyway. laughing at midnight about something that wasn't even funny but felt like the funniest thing that had ever happened.
the mountains don't care about your problems. that's the whole point of going.
went there not knowing anyone. came back with people i'll probably keep for a long time.

Ski Camp 2026 was such a memorable experience. Grade 9 – 12 went on the train all the way to Saas-Grund where our hostel was waiting for us.
The first day that we arrived we had packed lunch, had time to settle into our rooms, and then got ready to head up the gondola in our gear for a half-day of skiing in Saas-Grund.
Each day would start early with breakfast being at 7.30. After that, everyone geared up, found their groups, and made their way to catch the bus. For the rest of the week, we skied in Saas-Fee, the mountain with more variety of slopes and runs.
Beyond skiing, the camp was also about bonding with classmates. In the evenings, we spent time together playing games and doing the activities that each group would rotate every night. Ski camp helped SIS students get to know each other better outside of the classroom, which made the experience even more meaningful.
One of my favourite memories was the first night’s activity, sledging. Me and my friends sat on top of a little hill that everyone was sledging down. Sitting on top of the hill, I could see a beautiful view of the chalet lights. In that moment, I knew that this would soon be a memory I would miss.
Overall, ski camp taught me to step out of my comfort zone.
It was not just a school trip, but an unforgettable experience that I will always cherish.
